Hans and Sophia Poulsen




Grandfather Poulsen (Hans Poulsen)

Born 20 Oct 1845 at Ronnie on the Island of Bornholm Denmark. Son of Peder & Karen Chrisntina Retreys Poulsen. Educated in Ronnie Bornholm.

Came to America – at the age of 24 years. He had Joined the LDS Church and with his brother Andrew left their native land and sailed for America. Landing in Plain City Utah in 1869, four years later his parents and sisters came. (1873)

Grandfather worked in the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad when it first came into Ogden. Saving his money until he could purchase a farm which he bought in Plain City which he owned until the time of his death.

Marriage – September 23, 1872 he married Sophia Vangelin a native of Syepsala Sweden who was also a convert to the Church and had come to America with some friends at age 8.

Grandfather was always an active member of the church. He was a high Priest many years before his death, was a ward ( ) in the Ogden Stake for 35 years. He was a Sunday School teacher in Plain City for many years.

During the years of 1883-1885 he served a mission in Norway. On returning home he was a stake missionary for six years, walking or going with a team and buggy.

He served as a school trustee, Justice of the Peace, ( ), Registrar ( )

They were the parents of six boys and one girl. They are all deceased.

Grandmother died December 17, 1908 of ulcers of the stomach.

Uncle Louis lived with him until 1914 when he married.

Matilda Hassing Sorensen said:
“He was a very affectionate husband and father. He passed away December 14 1937 at the age of 92 years. Leaving his second wife, six children, 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren”
